BIOWATT-BIOGAS® Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment and Biogas Energy Utilization System

An integrated route from high-strength organic wastewater treatment to renewable power and biomethane

Powermax provides integrated systems for anaerobic industrial wastewater treatment, biogas purification and energy utilization. Applications include food and beverage processing, brewing and distilling, starch and sugar production, pulp and paper, fermentation and pharmaceutical manufacturing, livestock farming and other industries that generate organic wastewater. Based on wastewater characteristics, solids loading, site conditions and the intended use of the gas, the solution can integrate a CBD, IC, ICX or UASBplus anaerobic reactor with alkaline absorption and biological regeneration for desulfurization, followed by either biogas power generation or membrane upgrading to biomethane.

System Overview

The system is built around high-rate anaerobic treatment. After pretreatment and equalization, the wastewater enters the selected anaerobic reactor, where biodegradable organic matter is converted into biogas. The raw gas is conditioned and desulfurized before being directed either to a gas engine for grid-connected or island-mode power generation, or to a membrane upgrading package for biomethane production. Anaerobic effluent can be polished by downstream aerobic, nutrient-removal, advanced-treatment or resource-recovery processes according to discharge and reuse requirements.

Each project is engineered based on actual wastewater data and the client's energy objective. Reactor selection, pretreatment intensity, H2S outlet specification, membrane configuration, generator capacity and downstream-treatment scope are subject to final process calculations and design conditions.

Integrated Process Route

StepProcess UnitFunction
01Influent collection and pretreatmentRemoves coarse material and, where required, provides screening, grit removal, grease separation or solids separation to protect the biological process.
02Equalization and feed controlBalances flow, composition, temperature and pH and controls the feed rate to limit shock loading.
03High-rate anaerobic treatmentUses a CBD, IC, ICX or UASBplus reactor to reduce the organic load while producing methane-rich biogas.
04Biogas conditioningProvides gas-liquid separation, condensate drainage, filtration and pressure stabilization before deep desulfurization and utilization.
05Alkaline absorption and biological regenerationAbsorbs H2S into mildly alkaline wash liquid, biologically regenerates the liquor and recovers elemental sulfur, reducing chemical demand and protecting downstream equipment.
06Power and heat generationFeeds clean biogas to a gas engine for grid-connected or island-mode operation. Recoverable heat can be used for process heating where practical.
07Membrane upgrading and biomethane useAfter fine filtration, deep desulfurization and drying, multistage membrane separation increases the methane concentration. Product gas can be injected into a natural gas pipeline, processed into Bio-CNG or Bio-LNG, used as boiler fuel or transported by trailer.
08Effluent polishingAdds aerobic, nitrogen-removal, advanced-treatment or sludge-treatment steps to meet the required discharge or reuse standard.

Four Anaerobic Reactor Options

Powermax selects the reactor through a project-specific assessment rather than a single COD threshold. Key inputs include wastewater composition, soluble COD fraction, TSS and VSS, FOG, sulfate, temperature, pH, inhibitory compounds, load variability, available footprint and the condition of existing tanks.

TechnologyProcess UnitFunction
CSTRHigh-strength organic wastewater with elevated solids or variable suspended-solids loadingThe clean-bottom concept supports high-strength treatment and solids management. Suitability is assessed based on TSS, VSS, fats, oils and grease (FOG), and biodegradability.
ICHigh-strength industrial wastewater dominated by soluble CODInternal circulation enhances hydraulic mixing and mass transfer, enabling efficient COD removal and stable biogas production within a compact footprint.
ICXProjects with high organic loads, larger treatment capacities, or moderate fluctuations in wastewater flow and compositionBuilding on IC technology, ICX improves operating flexibility and granular-sludge retention and can be engineered around existing assets.
UASBplusNew-build or retrofit projects in food, beverage, starch, sugar and similar industriesA closed anaerobic system with efficient three-phase separation that can be installed in new or existing tanks while supporting reliable biogas collection.

Alkaline Absorption and Biological Regeneration

Raw biogas from anaerobic treatment normally contains hydrogen sulfide. Without proper control, H2S can corrode equipment, pose safety risks and impair engine and membrane performance. In the combined alkaline-biological route, H2S-containing gas contacts a mildly alkaline wash liquid in a counter-current absorber. The sulfide-rich liquid is then sent to a bioreactor, where sulfur-oxidizing microorganisms convert sulfide into elemental sulfur while regenerating the alkalinity. The regenerated wash liquid is continuously returned to the absorber.

Deep H2S removal, with the outlet specification selected for the engine, membrane system or final gas user.No direct air or oxygen injection into the main biogas line, helping preserve gas quality and methane heating value.
Regeneration and reuse of wash liquid to reduce continuous chemical demand and the burden of sulfur-containing waste disposal.Operating flexibility across a practical range of gas flows and sulfur loads, protecting piping, compressors, engines and membranes.

Two Biogas Utilization Routes

Route One: Biogas Power Generation

After desulfurization, drying and filtration, the gas is supplied to a low-speed gas engine or another gas engine selected for the project to produce electricity. The plant can be configured for grid-connected operation or, where the required controls, gas storage and load management are available, for island-mode operation. Engine heat may be recovered for digester temperature control, hot-water production, steam preheating or other plant thermal loads.

Typical scope: gas buffering and pressure control, condensate removal, fine filtration, a safety flare, a gas engine and a grid-connected or island-mode control system./孤岛控制系统。Best suited to sites with stable power demand, favorable electricity economics, grid-access opportunities or a need for captive generation.

Route Two: Membrane Upgrading

For biomethane, Bio-CNG, RNG or Bio-LNG projects, conditioned biogas undergoes compression, fine filtration, deep desulfurization and drying before entering a multistage membrane separation package. The membranes use the different permeation rates of CO2 and CH4 to separate the gases, while interstage recycle and process control balance product purity and methane recovery. Final gas quality, delivery pressure and utilization route are selected according to local standards, downstream facilities and the project business model.

Product routes: natural gas pipeline injection, compressed biomethane (Bio-CNG), liquefied biomethane (Bio-LNG), industrial boiler fuel or trailer delivery.Optional modules: CO2 recovery and liquefaction, product-gas boosting, CNG compression, LNG liquefaction and online gas-quality analysis.

Skid-Mounted and Containerized Membrane Upgrading System

The BIOWATT-BIOGAS membrane upgrading system integrates biogas conditioning, compression, deep desulfurization and drying, three-stage membrane separation, recycle control, product-gas analysis and safety controls into factory-assembled skids or containers. Piping, wiring and basic functional tests are completed before delivery to reduce on-site work, shorten installation and commissioning times, and support future capacity expansion.

The packaged system uses a three-stage membrane arrangement. Polymer hollow-fiber membrane modules are installed in stainless-steel housings and separate CO2 from CH4 through their different permeation rates. CO2 permeates more readily, while most methane remains on the high-pressure side. Interstage recycle and automatic control balance product-gas methane content, methane recovery and power consumption. Separation takes place at ambient temperature and normally requires no external heat source.

ModuleMain Equipment and Function
Feed-gas conditioning skidGas-liquid separation, particulate control and flow/pressure stabilization, with desulfurization, drying and oil-mist control selected to suit the raw-gas conditions.
Compression and cooling skidRaises the gas pressure to the level required for membrane operation and provides interstage cooling, condensate drainage and safety interlocks.
Three-stage membrane skidUses hollow-fiber membrane modules and interstage recycle for continuous CO2/CH4 separation and high methane recovery.
Product-gas and off-gas unitProvides online monitoring of CH4, CO2, H2S, O2 and dew point. Product gas can be sent to a natural gas pipeline, CNG compressor or LNG liquefaction unit; off-gas is recycled or treated according to project requirements.
Control and safety systemPLC automation, remote-monitoring interface, automatic start-up, shutdown and turndown control, emergency shutdown, gas detection and ventilation interlocks.

Performance and Application Range

A three-stage membrane configuration with methane recovery of up to 99.6%. Actual performance depends on raw-gas composition, product specification and project design.Nominal processing range from approximately 80 to 12,000 Nm³/h, using one train, parallel trains or phased expansion as required.
Adjustable product-gas methane content for pipeline, Bio-CNG, RNG or Bio-LNG requirements.Modular factory fabrication to reduce on-site installation work, with automatic start-up, shutdown and turndown control.
No process water is required by the membrane separation package, no process wastewater is generated in normal separation, and no chemical solvent is used.Membrane separation normally requires no external process heat. Off-gas treatment is selected based on methane content, local emissions requirements and downstream utilization conditions.

Data Required for Preliminary Selection

Preliminary selection requires the nominal, minimum and maximum biogas flow rates; raw-gas CH4, CO2, H2S, O2 and N2 concentrations; moisture content, temperature and pressure; target methane purity and recovery; product-gas destination; site and utility conditions; hazardous-area classification; noise limits; and emissions requirements.
